At Temple Shalom, we honor the tradition of yahrzeit. Please review our procedure and, if applicable, use this link to request a yahrzeit reading or to order a plaque.
Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Yahrzeits
What names are published on the Yahrzeit list? Any member can call and request that a name be placed on the Yahrzeit list to be read at services. A donation is not required. However, a time-honored custom when recalling the memory of a loved one is to perform the mitzvah of tzedakah (righteous giving). A contribution to Temple Shalom helps maintain our Temple activities and programs.
How do I purchase a Yahrzeit plaque to memorialize my loved one? This special remembrance requires a $200 donation. Yahrzeit plaques are found on yahrzeit boards inside the sanctuary. The fee for purchasing plaque or reserving a space for a plaque is the same. To reserve a space for a plaque near a loved one on a yahrzeit board, the temple must receive payment in full for a yahrzeit plaque at the time the reservation is made. Plaques already on the boards shall not be moved to accommodate new plaques. Yahrzeit plaque $200 per plaque Allow 10-12 weeks for delivery after your order is placed.
How is it determined when a Yahrzeit is read? Names are read at the Friday evening services following the actual English Yahrzeit date. The calendar placement of names for reading begins with the preceding Saturday through the current Friday for whatever week to be published/read (i.e., names to be read Friday and Saturday, January 14-15 have date of death ranging from January 8 through 14).
What if I want flowers placed in the sanctuary? If you call the temple office and request flowers, you may make a $25 donation to cover this cost, and we will order flowers for you. If you prefer, you can order your own flowers, and we will direct your florist to place them in the sanctuary when delivered.
